Not wanting the 2010 vintage of this blog (if it still makes sense to call it that) would end in May, I decided to make at least my best wishes for the new year. If you had asked the reason for such silence, as well as "normal, I'm lazy and it is not the first time you abandoned the blog for months," I can only reply that it was a year a bit 'troubled : I moved to Canada from Finland, before returning to Italy (firmly but not too much) after only two months.

After the Olympic gold in hockey in Canada, I was amazed of the very poor, even nonexistent jubilation on the streets of Montreal, arriving to give it jokingly to the "Canadian" of my fellow citizens today. The disorders last night following the Canadiens' victory and origin of name and nickname of the team, kindly explain to me recently by my colleague (French), show how it could still be far from the truth.
Rather, the Québec not mean a damn of Canada and its sporting achievements (even less than the average English to Catalan interests), I much prefer to follow the "real" Canadians , the Canadiens. One of the many effects of nationalism prevalent in these parts, unlike other , this has historical reasons, but like almost all nationalism often leads to regrettable excesses.

From the first access to what was then called MSN Messenger (and then I basically stopped using), I chose the nickname "wings (b)" so that my name appeared next to a nice mug of beer. I did it just because I liked it, and it took more than a year before anyone seemed to notice that I did it on purpose, since English ale means beer (or a type of beer , to be more precise). Since then I have at least one friend who calls me just Beer.
Here are the most common form of beer here in Quebec:
You will now understand that this long dissertation on the beer (for more caz ... er, curiosity about, I refer you to the excellent The Oatmeal ) it's all an excuse to introduce the real subject of this post: the units of measure.
If you think that the American system is crazy, you is not lived in Canada. Here officially using the metric system, but in practice many older units still in use, both imperial and American ! This situation becomes almost understandable when you consider that Canada is a member of the Commonwealth (formerly Empire) and borders with the U.S. (one of three countries in the world that has not officially adopted the metric system, along with Burma and Liberia ! ). But the trouble with the metric system in Canada is mainly due to political issues. Apparently, the conversion process began in the early '70s through the initiative of the Liberal government of Trudeau between obvious and continued controversy, until the Progressive Conservative Party (no joke ) came to power in the eighties, slowing and eventually stopping the process in mid-1985. The current situation is the result of this demonstration of political acumen.
To give another example of this madness beyond the beer in Canada road signs are in kilometers, railways miles.

As you probably know even the least sports fans on Sunday were closed Winter Olympics in Vancouver. I was planning to continue writing in Canada, but for now the conscience (appropriately stimulated by a friend ) leads me to postpone it further.
As you probably know already, the the continent's poorest country I am staying was hit by a strong earthquake The day before yesterday. Clearly, the dramatic consequences - we're talking about hundreds of thousands of deaths, probably the worst disaster in the face of the Earth from tsunami of 2004 - is also due to the existing and especially extreme poverty, and for those humanitarian efforts we can make country will remain highly vulnerable to disasters: it is already seriously hit by more hurricanes each year. For a more detailed analysis of this issue refer to another friend .
This does not mean that much can be done immediately. Many institutions are raising funds, I have chosen the MSF Canada, but any help will be useful, provided that arrivals (Trust only what you know.) The photos
(Southworth Sailor, some rights reserved ) shows the conditions around the capital Port-au-Prince first the disaster. These people have no more either.

Clearly, the dramatic consequences - we're talking about hundreds of thousands of deaths, probably the worst disaster in the face of the Earth from tsunami of 2004 - is also due to the existing and especially extreme poverty, and for those humanitarian efforts we can make country will remain highly vulnerable to disasters: it is already seriously hit by more hurricanes each year.
